On top the of age old Mesoamerican Reef stands the island jewel of the Riviera Maya, Cozumel. This is the largest reef system of the America’s, extending nearly 1000 kilometers. Located at the eastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, Cozumel was formed by coralline limestone rock and sand soils. It is the largest inhabited island in Mexico and the Caribbean’s premier dive spot.
The Island of Cozumel measures 48 kilometers (30 miles) from north to south but only 16 kilometers (10 miles) from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form many white sandy refuges. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while occasional waves crash against the eastern side.
The average daily air temperature on Cozumel is 80 degrees. In July and August, the highs range from the upper 80’s to the low 90’s. In December and January, the daytime temperatures average in the 70’s. During the winter months (September-December) Cozumel experiences cold fronts that may create windy, cloudy and cooler weather. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, usually lasting for an hour. Water temperatures range from 76 degrees-83 degrees throughout the year.
